new to this forum, and new to that kind of practise...

lundi 30 novembre 2015

Well

Thank you everyone who tried to help, explain, advised and support me in my situation described in the thread http://ift.tt/1HuFX5T

I would appreciate one more explanation - why moderators here deleted about a page of comments, my 3 posts, and as an excuse they post comment that they did not see answer to their question. I thought this is quite objective and neutral place to discuss that kind of problems. I saw that some people started using that thread to express their opinions on a bit different subject but deleting my direct answer to your question and then writing you did not get the answer ?

Please don't say it wasn't there. It was even corrected by moderators (probably you) because I wrote one a bit inappropriate sentence so that sentence was deleted, and I apologized for that realizing my wrong behavior.

Or maybe it was because to many people actually were supporting Ron's idea ?

Or maybe because I wrote one post (deleted now) where I explained how I plan vacation, how I do it in a quick wise way, why I don't think timeshare is a good thing for me or anyone I know. And I defended myself and showed how this last post there (it is last now) is completely pointless and is about nothing real.

I'm sorry. I'm having a problem with understanding that
Can anyone educate me here ?

Pete

Mayan Palace or Grand Mayan Riviera Maya

We're looking to make an exchange through RCI to either Mayan Palace or Grand Mayan Rivera. Any recommendations between which of the two would be a better option?

I'd also welcome any tips on staying in this area since this will be our first trip to the Cancun/Yucatan Peninsula area. Is it easy/safe to drive around?

Thank you!

New Marbrisa 1 br pics

I didn't get any interest in renting this week so I came down and checked in today. I have tests and Dr appointments this week so it will sit empty and I'll come back Friday.

We were placed in a new building, number 66 just finished recently, right next to the fitness center with the next building going up across the street. Its a handicap unit, no closet in the bedroom due to the walk in shower room. Not a big deal to us, they could have made a closet instead of the desk nook in the kitchen.

I'll add some pics later when I get home, we just checked in, took a hot tub and going to dinner and back home.

Gave back Stonecastle

Ours was not a lock off, it was a lovely 2 bedroom in Stonecastle, right beside Stonehenge Hole 11 green.

Two weeks ago we gave it back to awyndham as part of their 'goodwill Ovation program.

Hopefully we can still go there on their sale specials for a 1 bedroom in October at 1/3 the MF we were paying.

Hopefully the paperwork goes through and we are done with it.

Paid $1,000 on eBay so no huge loss in $$.

We love FG golf courses.

Question about Deposited Points.

I think I read this somewhere but I was hoping to get confirmation from someone. I just bought a 4800 points EOY starting in 2016, but already had several vacations booked in 2016.
If I deposit my 4800 points into 2017 before December 31st of this year can I borrow them back in 2016 if I need to.

If I use 2016 DC points to reserve 1/3 - 1/9/2016 at a resort (discounted rate) and find out tomorrow I don't need the unit will I get a penalty for canceling?

Amazon Prime very frustrating experience!

Dear Amazon Prime, I have spent ours today mostly talking to the Phillipines about your screw up on sending packages to the wrong address. What was supposed to be an easy way to do Christmas shopping has been a most difficult one.The Retail department's constant call drops after you give all of your information etc. Finally spoke with Dave from Washington State and he is the head supervisor and he agreed spending 4 hours on the phone trying to fix THEIR screw up was too long... Yes, I agree what are you going to do about it?? Basically nothing, very sorry... Very unimpressed with Amazon Prime customer service. Or lack of customer service. Thanks TUG friends for letting me vent my disappointment with Amazon Prime today!:0!! I am a big Amazon prime user and I have always been satisfied. So the experience today was not only frustrating but also quite disappointing!

Inactive Discover card?

I have a discover card for a very long time and use it mainly for all purchases .Until Costco no longer accepts it, I get the AMEX Costco card in my name.

Since then, I hardly use my discover card and have thought about closing it. However, a friend of my think I should keep it since it will help to get my credit score better. Not sure if what my friend told me is true. My credit scores is > 800

Now, I received a email from Discover to indicate that they will close my card in 30 days due to inactive .

Same thing, I have a capitol one , just use for travel purpose . I got a card a at that time because, only Capitol ( no annual fee) has the 0 foreign transaction fee . And this card sits long in my drawer and it has a special meaning . (It saved me when my return fly was cancelled in a middle of our family trip oversea by a scam travel agent who filed a bankruptcy)

I just wonder if I should contact Discover to try to keep this card open . This card is the longest card I have under my individual account . In my opinion, this card may not have any real benefit now, but it is the first credit card I got in my own name, I feel that it is a part of my life. If I let it closed, I just feel a little part of my life also missing .

RCI Membership...Whose names to List??

I have been a member of RCI for over 20 years. I now have grown children who would like to use our membership every now and then either with or without us.

The latest instance is an upcoming trip to Hawaii where our Daughter will be meeting us there and will be arriving at the Resort a day before we are able to get there. I called the resort to see if she could check in before we arrive. They are saying that even if we will be checking in the next day, she will need a guest certificate to check in. We plan to be traveling a good bit in the next few years as we are getting ready to retire and travel is in our foreseeable future. I am hoping to finally use a lot of the banked and deposited weeks I have with RCI.

It was my understanding that there can be two names on a RCI membership and check-in can be done by either listed member and the spouse. I called RCI twice and got different answers both times. The first call resulted in the rep checking with his supervisor and telling me that only the listed members on the membership could check in. The second said that listed members and their spouses could check in. The second said I could add my daughter by faxing a request to RCI stating the change of name in writing and faxing a document that listed her as an owner of one of the timeshare weeks that we own. Luckily, as soon as she was 18 I did buy a rtu timeshare in Mexico that will expire in a couple of years and I do have her listed as an owner. I plan to send the paperwork in on Monday to take my name off and add her name on to the RCI membership. I have never deposited this week with RCI even though it is an RCI resort, hopefully they will not be a problem.

Has anyone ever done this before? And if so- what might I be missing in my plan? I can't seem to find the original terms of membership listed anywhere-if anyone has a link it would be appreciated. I

Risky to change reservation at WSJ?

Last night I was able to secure 5 nights in a 3 bedroom at Bay Vista. It was exactly 8 months out. For several reasons I would much prefer to start our 5 day stay on the next day, Saturday. It does show some (low) availability online. I am considering canceling our reservations right before midnight and trying to secure a new reservation starting on Saturday. However, I will be super upset with myself if I cancel and then end up with nothing! I just called reservations and they were not able (or unwilling) to tell me how much availability there is.

Any advice?

Exception to Sticky above about Renting

In reference to this Sticky post by Denise above....
How to confirm that a rental is legit:

First step - ALWAYS ask if they are renting an exchange. RCI* and II do not allow exchanges to be rented, and if you get caught, you can lose the rental and your $$$. You can tell if it is an exchange, when they send you a copy of their confirmation, because it will be a confirmation from the exchange company, not directly from the resort.

This is not always the case. If you own an RCI Points week, and you choose to use your home resort week, you book it through RCI (12 months out.) There is no charge since it it your ownership week, but the process is completed through RCI. If you choose to rent your week at that point, the guest certificate would be issued legitimately through RCI.
This was my experience about 5 years ago. I bought a Ca coastal week that had previously been made into a Points week. The week was far more valuable as a rental or for personal use. I booked my home resort week twice, and found the process rather galling... that I had to book 12 months out in a small window and request a guest cert for a fixed week that I owned. Eventually, I pulled this week out of Points.
This is a rare circumstance, but possible.:)

Parking pass/update "tango" at Wyndham at The Cottages

I will forewarn you that this is sorta long and drawn out. Just thought some of you would be interested in "our" check-in story.
So... DH and I arrive at NMB on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and go to OB Tower 4 Lobby to check into our 4 br cottage reserved with ARP October 2014. Check in goes well, cottage is not ready but it's around 1:40 and they say it will be ready by 2:00 so we're happy. Requested two pack 'n plays for twin grandsons and they are being delivered to cottage. Go over to get parking pass and the girl is so excited to tell us that they have "Thanksgiving" food over at Member Services in Tower 2 and we should go get something to eat while we wait. We're a little skeptical but hadn't had lunch so we said okay. As the two girls behind the counter had been, almost giddily, telling us about the food they were also mentioning that we could go to a breakfast meeting on Friday or Saturday since they knew we wouldn't want to on Thanksgiving and they could give us tickets to the Christmas Show at Carolina Opry for all the people in our party. I knew we probably wouldn't be going to a show and wasn't really interested but was going along to speed up the process. Now for the "rest of the story." Parking pass girl walks with us across the street to Tower 2 to show us where the food is... so we go to the Member Services desk and they start telling us someone will be with us in just a minute to give us our update, etc. DH and I are looking at each other like, Who said anything about an update? I told the girl at the MS desk that we weren't there for an update, just for lunch. Then a man hears us and assures us that everything will be "made right." Seems the "lunch" food (sandwiches) was gone and the heavier food (bbq chicken, bbq pork, mashed potatoes, etc.) was on its way. So we keep insisting that we need to go, that our cottage is probably ready by now, etc. So same man reappears and is speaking to the girl who has now been assigned to give us our update and says they will also give us a $100 AMEX card. Well that doesn't sound bad and since we're already there, we decide to go through the process. BAD IDEA! She takes us to a different room "that isn't as crowded/noisy" so we can talk while the promised food arrives. The main premise of the update is about the Norwegian cruises being added and can be reserved with points and then it is highly suggested that we also need to add a small CWA contract to our account b/c we love coming to NMB (where we own) and more points at the Myrtle Beach resorts are now CWA than individual deeds. Somehow I find that very hard to believe! In the meantime, I've gotten a call saying our cottage is ready and I can come pick up the keys. Since it is now around 3 pm, I know I need to get back over to check-in desk b/f all the 4:00 arrivals are there. I leave (much to the dismay of our update girl) to get the keys and am very glad I did b/c the lobby was filling up with people fast! When I got back, DH was eating and I went to get a plate. Our girl was talking fast about all the reasons we should add the CWA contract and then had a "closer" come over. I was finished eating by now and got a text from our daughter and family who were "20 minutes away" and, at the rate things were going, might arrive at the cottage b/f we got there ourselves! When the "closer" got to the table, he started his spiel, and I just stood up and said we have to go. He was like, it won't take long for me to explain... I understand you're having trouble getting in at Ocean Blvd. and we can help you with that. I was like, who said that? We come here all the time. I haven't had any problems at all! Well, from the looks of "our girl's" face, she was the one who told him that -- not sure why... I just said, we don't have time. Our daughter and her family are almost here and we need to leave NOW so we will be at the cottage when they arrive. He kept trying to say, it won't take long etc. I said, our family is more important. We're leaving! So we walked out. Did go by for the AMEX card and show tickets (which we didn't use) and got to the cottage a couple minutes b/f DD and family arrived.
Other than all that crap, we had a wonderful time. The weather has been beautiful - sunny and 70's. Our Thanksgiving meal was good, our daughter and son-in-law got some shopping done while we enjoyed the grandkids and all is well with the world. Such a shame, they offered us lunch and turned that first hour or so into a fiasco!

Is DAE good for exchanging Starwood?

I don't really need Starwood to Starwood priority and would like to try depositing both sides of my Sheraton Broadway Plantation lockoff with DAE or another alternative to II. Oceana Palms - Trust Points only at 13 months?

Tried to make a reservation for next Dec. It was all going well. The rep found the dates. Cancelled another reservation to get the points back. Rep asked me to hold while she booked OP2. Came back to say she was having trouble and needed to get someone to help. Back on hold. She came back to apologize that she wouldn't be able to book the dates because it was Trust Points only at OP2 at the 13 month mark and I could try again at 12 month mark. I'm at Chairman level.

Is this true?

Resale brought into SVN

Hello all:
I had a resale for Vistana Resort that I purchased on eBay!
Went through the "Owners Update" this past Monday and was convinced (not yet sure if fortunately or unfortunately) to purchase from the developer and they would bring my resale into the SVN network. I now have a total package of 141,000 StarOptions for a $20k purchase... Been reading this site a bit and wish I would have found it sooner! Thoughts? Should I rescind?

TDI question II new catalogue

Just received a new II catalogue for 2016/2017. At the beginning of each regional section it shows a TDI for that region or subregion. The numbers don't make sense to me. For example NY gets a 3, Orlando 5, Western Canada 10, HI 13, Wmsburg 29, lower FL Keys 51, SoCal 70. I found a description of the standard TDI chart that shows demand over the year but no explanation of the regional TDI. I hoped the regional TDI might indicate a regions' relative supply versus demand, a metric that has not previously been made public. But based on what I know about locations that are hard to trade into, there is no correlation w the numbers. Does anyone know what info II is trying to communicate?

Maintenance Fees - In North Carolina do they all have to be the same?

We were told that by law (not sure whose law) that all Maintenance Fees at a particular resort need to be the same Regardless of Unit Size or Season. Our resort has both two bedroom and three bedroom units and the maintenance fee is exactly the same regardless of unit size and those with winter weeks (we are at a beach) pay the same as those with summer weeks. While we are not in that category, it doesn't seem fair that those with Winter weeks, who can't make use of the outdoor pool, snack shack, or tennis courts should pay the same fees as those with Summer weeks. We are trying to determine if this is an actual North Carolina or Dare County law or if it is simply something in the by-laws that could possibly be changed? I don't know where to begin to research this issue and I am hoping someone on TUG might be able to help. Sometimes things are said so often that no one ever checks out if they are really true. Thanks in advance.

Cyber Monday deals at Hale Koa Hotel

The Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki is not a timeshare, but I know Tuggers who are military-connected often stay there before or after a timeshare stay in Hawaii. I've done it myself. It's a very nice place.

I've been receiving emails from them advising that they're going to have a super deal of some sort starting this coming Monday. My guess is it'll be discounts on room rates, or something similar. If you're inclined to want to check it out, as I'll be doing, they're offering a number of ways to find out what's going on. If you go to www.halekoa.com you can find out more.

I have no connection to them, and this post shouldn't be considered advertising. Think of it as one Vet helping another. :)

Why does the store nearest me

I was just reading the thread, "next year's turkey plan". I clicked on the Chef John's gravy recipe, and " the store nearest me" that I can buy the ingredients for the recipe was displayed at the end of the recipe they almost nailed it a local Giant Eagle grocery store near me. Little scary huh?

Keep it or cancel it ? Hilton New York Club - is it really a scam ??

Hi

I'm totally new to the timeshare subject and so far I have a pretty bad imagination about it :( My main question is to find out if I have any reasons to keep my timeshare or I should rather try my best to get rid of it as soon as possible. I would like to make an educated decision

I believe I should provide here a few facts so some of you will be able to advice me knowing all details.

Timeshare was purchased by my wife (finance that time) as something what guy like me, who used to travel a lot, will enjoy together with her in the future. It was typical hard push sell and she felt super educated, and totally felt into the trap, asked millions of questions, and all answers were clearly a bunch of lies to pleasure the future client. When I confronted Hilton about that, their answer was simple :wall: she had 10days to cancel the contract. Well, unfortunately she was way to busy, later we were busy with our lives and marriage, and when I tried to use it for our honeymoon in Florida... of course no chance whatsoever, everything booked months in advance. I tried to book something later in Hawaii, for our honeymoon part two, no chance for any place around our dream location and our scheduled vacation time. Completely useless product. I don't have explain here that it toke me about 10-20min to find some other place and book it for very reasonable price.

Details about this product
It is Hilton NY Club timeshare.
Amount financed : $36,000
Finance charge : $36,500
Annual % rate : 16 %
Total Price including all other costs : $80,500
(please don't judge my wife here, she is already crying everyday and working extra shifts :bawl:)
She purchased it this year, in January 2015
So far we already paid : $13,000
Every month payment : $605

We received 20,000 bonus points - expiration Jan 2017 and for each year 2015,2016,2017 - another 3x 5,000 points
however points for 2015 will expire in Dec2015. Of course we are not going to use it because there is no chance to book anything now.
So in total we have 35,000 points. I know that I could keep point from 2015 however this crap company charge a fee for every modification about $100

Now, we just received letter to pay annual fees : $1600

For me, this is clearly the biggest scam ever executed in white gloves without any sweat. Additionally it says made in compliance with Federal Law. Looks like law does allow for the legal robbery.

Simple calculation
This have to be paid in 10 years = $80,500
Add to this annual fees which will go up for sure = $19,500
Total = $100,000

It means that I will spent $10k each year for week of vacation,
well I actually can't really book anything so far.

I tried to convince myself and calculate it in a longer period of 20 years.
$100k + 10y annual fees ($22,000) = $122k

Now it gives me about $6.1k per each vacation

Wow ! we are still talking about pretty expensive rental for very limited amount of places with super limited availability :annoyed:

So... after doing some research, and simple math I already spoke with one place, where they promise to get rid of the contract and loan without any further payments. Sweet - we have to swallow that we completely lost $13k.
Nope !! They asked for $10k to do it and it may take 3-6months. WTF ? Not mentioning it was pretty much like a BS sale of another piece of crap.
I already have to accept losing such a huge money and somebody even dare to ask to double it ?! Why this country cannot just ban timeshare market completely. It allows to scam innocent people who would like to save a bit, do something in a better way, and actually ending up losing their life savings. I can't understand this.

Please help me to figure it out. Maybe I see it wrong. Maybe there is something positive about timeshare. Maybe I still could enjoy it instead of going on holiday and think all the time that I'm paying triple price for the same room which I could rent for close to nothing so now I'm on my holiday but I can't afford a drink because I'm totally an idiot.

:ponder: Do you think I should keep this timeshare ?
Why would I do that ? Why not just simply when I want to go on vacation research something on internet and book it without any complications.

:ponder: Do you think I should quickly find a good lawyer to terminate this ?
What is the main reason in your opinion ? Can you point any reasonable lawyer ?

Please keep in mind - I'm DO NOT PLAN to find a buyer for my timeshare - I'm thinking about getting rid of the contract and the loan in a legal way by an agreement with Hilton or taking them to the court. I will not recover any of already paid money however I will be able to save another $80k by not paying it in the future and wisely spending it on my vacations.
I'm reaching here to people who are more experience with this subject if they have any better advice and could actually suggest something smart instead of just another long difficult fight.

Thank you in advance for any help
Pete

Forfeiting MR points upon death of MR member

My husband and I both have separate MR account numbers. He has 389,000 points in his account and I have 154,000 in mine. He is very seriously ill with brain cancer and the long term outlook is not good. Since the cancer is on his brain stem his cognitive and speech abilities are seriously impacted thus he can hardly be calling Marriott to make arrangements to order up a vacation package. I understand this his points will be lost should he not survive his illness. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can save any of these points by say putting his miles into a FF account in my name with United or American that I could then use at some point in the future? Any suggestions would be appreciated. We gave up use of our weeks several times to accumulate those points for future travel awards and it just burns me up that we gave up our weeks usage and now those points might be useless.

I just received an email from vidanta that the new Greg Norman course is open. We have the 16 rounds of free golf, but when I tried to book I was told it only pertains to the old course and does not include any future courses. I stated that it does not say anything about this in my contract. Anyone else have this problem yet? I'd like to get a group of owners together and fight this. We're going to NV in January so I'll check it out.

RCI restore deposit trading power option

I'm not sure if this was posted and if it was, please feel free to delete or merge my post. While trolling around RCI, I noticed on the page that lists available deposits a banner for the above noted feature.

Long and short, you can deposit your week up to two weeks before check in and pay a fee to have the trading power restored to if you had deposited it at nine months. Here are the Guidelines for it.

http://ift.tt/1LENhGW

While I was holding with Interval to cancel an exchange, I did a live chat with RCI and found out that the cost is 69 U.S. and 95 CAD.

Again, if this is a repeat, my apologies.

Wanting to give timeshare back

We own (paid in full) a timeshare at VDP in Puerto Vallarta. We have it till 2026 (30 year deal). We no longer want to pay the maintenance fees since our Cdn dollar is so low it's cheaper to just buy a one week All inclusive vacations instead.
We phoned them to tell them they can just have it back but they are saying we will have to pay the 2016 maintenance fee. Do we have to pay it since we are giving back a fully paid timeshare?
We've thought of selling it but really don't think we will get anything for it so just don't want it to not cost more then it already has.
thanks for any advice of the subject.

Can I merge II accounts?

I have two Interval International accounts resulting from resale purchases at WKV (a mandatory property) and SDO (a voluntary property). I would like to merge the II accounts for two reasons: 1. To reduce the memberships fees, 2. To simplify viewing all of my exchanges. On the phone, II has told me it is impossible to merge the two accounts. Is that correct?

House Keeping and Front Desk for Week Owners

It sure seems that week owners are paying the cost of extra room cleanings and front desk staffing needed to support the DC program. Now that a "week" may have multiple occupants that book with DC points, more staff is needed at from desk and rooms have to be cleaned more often. I don't see a line item on the budget for "INCOME" to offset these cost. Is the DC program paying the fee for the extra room cleanings and front desk staff?

If I book my week, I get the room cleaned once before I check in. I don't believe that there is a mid-week tidy service any longer at Shadow Ridge or Desert Springs where I own my weeks.

If MVC clubs rents out a room it may have multiple occupants for that same week. Are they paying to fully clean the room after each check out during the week.

Since the inception of DC, 2010-2015, the Housekeeping fee has increased from $102.71 to 174.98 which is a 70% increase. If I remember correctly last time I was there, the fee to have a full cleaning was $85.00. So it appears I pay for 2 cleanings each week even though I only get 1. Seems the other one goes to give DC program a free cleaning.

Front desk cost has increase during the DC program life from $$52.43 to $72.76 which is a 72% increase.

I seem to remember that the reason I get 24% less points for some of the weeks in my season than it takes to book the same week in the DC system, was because of broken weeks. Seems like I am already paying for the broken weeks in my fees.

Just my yearly rant on run away MF's. Can't wait to see what we pay when we have real inflation!

Next years Turkey plans..

Brined a turkey for the first time ever. Turkey was exceptionally moist and tender. BUT the gravy made from the juice of this delicious bird was a "salt lick".

My sister's gravy is a family favorite and she is in charge of the gravy no matter who hosts Thanksgiving.

Does anyone else who brines their Turkey make gravy from scratch using the pan juices? Do the 2 just not go together?

How do I deed back my week?

I own a week at a resort in Las Vegas, (Cliffs at Peace Canyon). I have it for sale but no takers. I've read that some resorts will take the deed back if you can not pay the maintenance fee. Who would I call: the resort? ~ the HOA? ~ or the Management company? Never had to do this before and I am at a loss. Any help, please.

The New Gene-Editing Technique That Reveals Cancer's Weaknesses

The New Gene-Editing Technique That Reveals Cancer's Weaknesses - by Ed Yong/ Science/ The Atlantic/ theatlantic.com

"CRISPR can finally tell us which human genes are essential—and which matter specifically to cancer cells..."

Humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes, but which of these really matter? Which are essential, and which are merely optional add-ons?

It’s crazy to me that we still don't know, even though it’s been almost 15 years since the first draft of the human genome was published. Partly, the problem is a technological one. The best way of working out if a gene is essential is to disable it and see what happens, and “we just didn’t have a good way of systematically manipulating genes in humans cells,” says Jason Moffat from the University of Toronto. Sure, scientists have been able to tinker with individual genes, but working through them all, and knocking them out one by one, has been nigh-on impossible.

A technique called RNA interference has come closest. When genes are activated, the instructions encoded within their DNA must first be transcribed into a related molecule called RNA. By interfering with these transcripts, scientists can stop those instructions from ever being realized. But this technique is imperfect: It often fails to silence genes entirely, and it sometimes silences the wrong gene. “That technology allowed us to uncover some of the essential genes but our confidence wasn’t super-high,” says Moffat.

Enter the revolutionary gene-editing technique called CRISPR, which was invented billions of years ago by bacteria, as part of a defense system for hacking into the genes of invading viruses. But in the last five years, scientists have repurposed it into a tool that can edit any gene at will. Unlike RNA interference, which disables the messages transcribed from genes, CRISPR alters the gene itself. It’s like changing the actual text of the book, rather than just gagging someone who’s reading from it. And these changes are very specific—CRISPR rarely misses its target..."

Black Friday Shopping -- on Thursday?

There are some really good "Black Friday" deals...
I scored a Dell laptop with 8GB RAM, 1TB HD, Touch Screen for $300.

I also ordered a bunch of stuff online from Office Depot & Sears.
It's nice that stores are now letting us do our Black Friday shopping in PJ's.

That said, I find it unconscionable for the sales to start on Thanksgiving.
True, we'd otherwise have nothing else much to do, but stare at family.

IMHO, starting Black Friday on Thanksgiving dilutes the purpose of both.
Is it really Black Friday when we can finish our shopping on Thursday?

If I buy two Every Other Year properties at the same location and pay significantly less than one Annual (same location points etc...) In effect are not the maintenance fee's the same? And if I already pay club dues shouldn't it be a better deal except the resale I'm expecting. What else am I overlooking?

I just got an II conformation on a pretty good trade that I would like to piggyback on a week at one of my home resorts that I reserved some time ago. I'm not a member of the DC. Also, what is the deadline for cancelling the II reservation?

The 16th-Century Origins of Food Porn

The 16th-Century Origins of Food Porn - by Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell/ Culture/ Entertainment/ The Atlantic/ theatlantic.com

"For several hundred years humans have treated food not just as sustenance, but as spectacle.

Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember that, for humans, eating is never just about the food. It’s also about ritual, be it the perfectly brewed cup of morning coffee or the annual appearance of grandma’s pumpkin pie. Presentation is what separates us from other animals. We all must eat, but only humans have gone beyond sustenance to make napkin origami and Mayflower centerpieces—and then post pictures of them on the Internet..."

How Turkey Went Global

How Turkey Went Global - by Heather Horn/ International/ The Atlantic/ theatlantic.com

"One bird’s journey from the forests of New England to the farms of Iran.

In the annals of packing blunders, surely there’s a special place for the time English settler ships brought European-raised turkeys to New England in 1629. There’s forgetting a toothbrush, for example, and then there’s living in a dropping-filled boat for three months in order to deposit anemic, sea-ruffled birds in forests positively lousy with their larger, fatter cousins.

Today, America’s most famous fowl is consumed on all seven continents, is a mainstay of European poultry production, enjoys its highest per-capita consumption rate in Israel, and can be found on farms from Poland to Iran to South Africa. To understand how that happened, one could do worse than start with the odd cargo of 17th-century settler ships..."

Interval closed today and I have to cancel a match

I had an ongoing search that matched and the email hit my email account at 11:55 last night. Interval is closed today. I'm kicking myself because I amended my search yesterday - totally forgot about it being a holiday in the States today. Should have waited until tomorrow.

I'm assuming I won't have any problem tomorrow but has anybody run into this before? Any problems?

Thanks

Daily Management, Inc -Resort Property Management Company

While I was searching for information on a possible rate increase for my maintenance fees at GrandView Las Vegas, I came across this company: Daily Management, Inc.

They have an agreement form for this resort and many others.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of them.

Looked at their site for more information as to fees, etc., but didn't find anything, yet. Just sent a message asking for details.

I'd rather sell my timeshare, but if I could get some of my money back renting - with no hassle - then that could work, too.

Thanks for your help.

Also, I would like to know which site of air craft I should select my seat to have a best view of Bali island . The Silk air craft is A330-200 or 320-200

Thank you.

Since Rock Legend Janis Joplin Died at 27, Producers Have Spent Millions to Make a Movie About Her - and Its Finally Happening - by Jason Guerrasio/ Entertainment/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"In an era when rock and roll was dominated by the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin broke through as one of the top female singers of the 1960s with her potent, soulful vocals and relatable personality.

Though, on the surface, Joplin inspired millions of female fans with her independent style and ferociously confident stage presence, offstage the singer used her hard partying to mask an aching desire to find a companion. A heroin overdose led to her death at the age of 27 in 1970.

The meteoric rise and all-too-young death of Joplin were ripe for the Hollywood treatment. Yet somehow, 45 years after her passing, a biopic still hasn’t been made about the artist.

But it’s not due to a lack of trying..."

IRS:Taxpayers May Immediately Deduct The Purchase of Assets Costing Less Than $2,500

IRS:Taxpayers May Immediately Deduct the Purchase of Assets Costing Less Than $2,500 - by Tony Nitti/ Forbes/ Taxes/ forbes.com

"Lost among the administrative and technical complexities of the “repair regulations” was the occasional bit of good news.

For example: for years, taxpayers have fought with IRS examiners about whether the cost of certain small assets may be immediately deducted, or if instead, the cost must be capitalized and depreciated.

At the heart of the issue was the question of “materiality:” the taxpayer complained that the cost of the asset was so insignificant that to capitalize and depreciate the asset caused more headaches than anything else, while the IRS traditionally countered with the (absolutely correct) argument that there is no such thing as materiality when it comes to asset purchases.

If the asset has a useful life that extends beyond the end of the year of purchase, the IRS asserts, Section 263 requires the taxpayer to capitalize the cost and depreciate the asset, regardless of the purchase price.

This led to long and painful arguments between the IRS and taxpayers that, quite frankly, both sides grew weary of. As a result, when the repair regulations were finalized in August 2013, they included a “safe harbor” that would put an end to the majority of these battles..."

Get Ready for Li-Fi , a Technology 100 Times Faster Than Wi-Fi

Get Ready for Li-Fi, a Technology 100 Times Faster Than Wi-Fi - by Victoria Ho/ Tech/ Mashable/ mashable.com

"The world might eventually have to shift its reliance on Wi-Fi to Li-Fi, an alternative technology that scientists say can reach speeds of 1 Gbps in real-world use — 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi speeds.

At those speeds, you could download a high-definition movie in just a few seconds.

A company called Velmenni told the IBTimes UK that it took the technology out of the labs and into real-world offices and industrial environments in Estonia, where it was able to achieve those speeds.

Li-Fi transmits data using LED lights, which flicker on and off within nanoseconds, imperceptible to the human eye. It was invented in 2011, and in the lab, has been able to reach a mindblowing 224 Gbps.

Unlike Wi-Fi signals which can penetrate walls, Li-Fi is based on light and can't, so its range is theoretically more limited. However, because of that limit, Li-Fi is also potentially more secure from external sniffing..."

Recovery for broken shoulder

I'm sure there are other Tuggers who have broken their shoulder. How tough is the recovery? Will I really have to wait 5 weeks to drive? This is a travel story too. Last week on the way to Vegas I fell while changing planes in Houston. I have an acute fracture of the proximal humerus and an incomplete fracture of the surgical neck. The fracture is aligned so I don't need surgery. I'm in a sling and start therapy next week. Of course it's my dominant arm. Will I get full range of motion back? Any advice?

Barony Beach new look

The first two buildings of renovations are now complete at Barony Beach Club in Hilton Head. Two more buildings are scheduled to be done before Christmas. The rest will be done next fall.

The look is actually quite nice. Very clean and tasteful. Really like the large print of the Hilton Head lighthouse in the living area... adds something unique.

At first glance, I was taken back by the "plastic/laminate" dining room table. But I've actually decided it was a very wise choice. Easy to wash and maintain and will be able to standup to the heavy use.

The second bathroom, in many ways, is nicer than the master. Stunning tile and shelving!

One very minor comment about the master bathroom. The shower room is big. The towel rack is on the wall opposite from the shower (a long way fro the shower when you are wet). There is no place to hang a towel next to the shower. A small hook beside the shower door would be nice.

Again, very impressed.

I've submitted photos to the review side of TUG. Hope this link works for others:

Maintaining VIP Status through Resale Using LLC

Does anyone know if this can be done? I'm in talks with a guy who has VIP status with Wyndham. I'd like for him to put the title in an LLC, add me as an LLC member and user on the account, and then sell me his LLC shares--keeping the title in the LLC's name. I would just change the password on the account. Does anyone know if this could work?

Travel between terminals at Mexico City

I've tried to do some research online but but no real success. If you are arriving into Terminal 2 but want to go over to Terminal 1 to use a lounge during a long connection/layover, can you get over there without leaving the secure area. I know there is a train but how much of a hassle is it to go from T2 to T1 to use the lounge then come back to T2?? I'd rather minimize trips through Mexican security screening. Thanks!!

Hollywood Tours from Anaheim (2-4 hours)

We're heading to Marriott's Newport Coast Villas on Sunday and would like to find a good tour from Anaheim that's maybe only 2-4 hours. The resort has a tour with Have Fun Tours, but it's 8 hours. Since we are two seniors, we'd like to find a shorter tour of the celebs homes. We took the tour to the Farmer's Market, Hollywood Walk of Stars and Universal Studios last year from Escondido. We don't mind driving to Anaheim to get the tour, but do not want to drive to LA. Are we out of luck? I've been searching for days, but some of the tours listed on Trip Advisor have poor reviews. We may need to find something else to do while in the area.

Why would I enroll my week in DC?

I've had my Marriott shadow ridge platinum week for about 6 years now. It is every other year and for each of those years I have been able to the following exchanges:
2012 - 2 bedroom NCV spring break
1 bedroom MOC June week

2014- 2 bedroom NCV spring break
2 bedroom Waiohai

As you can see it has served me well trading in II. I also have other weeks in II and use getaways often so I would always have that membership. We do often have to give up a night of two since out flights don't always line up perfectly with the weeks we book. Just went to a presentation on DC and still cannot see that it would benefit me to enroll my week. But I do see that a lot of tuggers have enrolled so maybe I am missing something. Any input would be great. Thanks

I don't know if other states have this, but I got an email from Coinbase saying it is now offered in my state. If you have bitcoins, you can get a debit Visa card and use that anywhere that takes Visa. It will use your bitcoins. It is called a shift card. No, I won't be getting one, but for people who have lots of money in bitcoins, it could be very useful.

How soon can a 2017 floating week be traded in II?

Hi, all! I own a "fixed/floating" week in the Cascades section of SVR. It is deeded as Week 7, but can float 1-52. It is an Every-Other-Year week, and its next use is in 2017.

I see that my 2016 weeks are already available for deposit, so I'm guessing that a 2017 week can be deposited starting January 1, 2016. Am I correct that this 2017 week can be deposited in Interval starting January 1, 2016?

Grandview in Las Vegas - Questions

Just won a 122,000 annual points Grandview off eBay so pretty excited to get ownership here.

I am curious I heard there was a way to get weekend stays here with points.

Another thing I read somewhere was you get priority on extra vacations and offers.

I am wondering if there is anything else I should know in owning here. I wanted to own here and figured since the resale on the 122,000 point accounts was relatively good if I decided I didn't like it then I could always resale.

Thanks to all who respond.

Travel Industry Elbows Its Way Into the Hot-Deal Conversation

Travel Industry Elbows Its Way Into the Hot-Deal Conversation - by Harriet Baskas/ Business/ Travel/ NBC News/ nbcnews.com

" Travel purveyors are doing their best to ensure that turkey, "Star Wars" toys and 50-inch TVs aren't the only things that have consumers licking their chops this week. Companies are dangling all sorts of hot deals on adventures and vacations to remind shoppers that the launch of the holiday shopping season isn't just about things.

Studies have shown that travel is increasingly high on shoppers' "want" lists, so it's only logical that the industry would want to get in on the Black Friday, Cyber Monday action, said Sarah Gavin, a spokeswoman for Expedia.com..."

Need Google Maps Navigation Tips

I used to have an easy time navigating in Google Maps.

That is no longer true.

If I enter a destination location (Point A), I haven't been able to figure out how to scroll North, South, East and West from Point A - I can Zoom In and Out within certain constraints but can't scroll in different directions like I used to be able to do.

Probably an easy fix.

Any help appreciated.

Have MF's dropped? This year or ever?

In round numbers the US dollar is up, 20-25% over the peso in 2015. Our resort calls it "a 19% change in favor of the resorts." Our Royal Resort MF stayed flat this year. Anyone in MX have theirs go down this year ? And also really interesting to know if anyone ever saw them ever go down (and by how much), thanks ? Would hate to see the US dollar lose 20%, but glad to see flat fees this year.

DVC-Old Key West

We have an RCI exchange into Old Key West for this coming February. I have always wanted to stay in one of the units at this resort and am pretty excited about going. Have a one-bedroom unit, and it will be my husband and I going. We love playing tennis and note that there are tennis courts at this resort. Also, enjoy swimming/laying around the pool. We are not going to any of the parks on this trip as we have been so many times over the last couple of years. We have annual passes to SeaWorld this year and will probably go there for one or two days during our week at Old Key West.

Can anyone who has been to this resort recommend which building to request that would offer us a great view, be close to the tennis courts and a pool? I printed out a map of the resort, but believe that some of the buildings are only for DVC owners (which we're not), correct?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!

Got bullied by II into cancelling my search

Called II this morning, within 9 hours of an auto-confirmation of a search I had going. Got matched to New Orleans for President's Day week, but it's only a studio and I would rather hold out for the slim hope of getting Mardi Gras or Jazz Festival, given that my 2016 vacation weeks are getting booked up.

Very nice rep on the phone, who sternly told me that I've reached the limit of cancelling exchanges. That I've cancelled four times previously (this would be the fifth time, and five is the limit) and even though my cancellations were done within 24 hours each time, that five is the limit and I won't be able to cancel this fifth time, even though cancelling within 24 hours. I politely told her that I haven't seen that "five time" limit anywhere in the rules, and that I'm cancelling within 24 hours, and that I wanted her to go ahead and return my search to a pending search, and that I would tweak the dates to what I want now.

She put me on hold and told me that she did some research and the best she could do for me is cancel the search totally. She said I would be refunded my exchange fee, but the only way she can handle this is to cancel this search since I'm cancelling after matching to weeks that I've requested.

Honestly, after that long, I ran out of patience and out of time. And meekly agreed to cancel the search (which is so unlike me, the meek part). if the rep had been offensive or rude in any way, I would have taken the time to argue about it.

Has this happened to anyone else? I feel silly now for cancelling the search when I didn't really have to and I've lost the priority date for when the search was started, plus I have to take the time to set up a new search, and I have to track that the refund actually did go through.

Marriott biggest or most popular timeshare program?

There are 4-5x more threads/posts in the Marriott forums than HGVC.

Is Marriott that much more popular, or do TUGGERS just happen to be Marriott owners out of coincidence?

I'll admit that I didn't do much research or company comparisons before buying HGVC in 2013.

Marriott biggest or most popular timeshare program?

HGVC vs Marriott timeshare

I am a HGVC owner (bought in 2013) with little experience in the timeshare industry.
I was browsing the TUG forums and looking at HGVC vs Marriott threads/posts, there are 4-5x more Marriott threads/posts than HGVC.

Is Marriott that much more popular, or do they have have so many issues that come up that people need to post about?

We bought HGVC without doing much comparison research, so I'm asking after the fact.

Room Types/Locations at Wyndham Riverside Suite

I am planning a trip to San Antonio in a few weeks, and have rented a one-bedroom at Wyndham Riverside Suites rom a TUG member. I have heard that one's experience at this resort depends greatly on room type and location, so I am hoping for some tips!

Reading the reviews of this resort, it has a great location on the Riverwalk, but rooms that actually face the Riverwalk tend to be noisy. Also, I have heard there is a fish restaurant next door, which produces a lot of odors. I am very sensitive to noise and smells, so I'm trying to figure out the best room location to avoid these problems.

Also, I know that some of the one-bedrooms are two-levels with a spiral staircase, and I'd have a lot of problems with the stairs. I called the resort and they said I have a "standard one-bedroom." I asked if this meant a unit without stairs, and they said I could be assigned either type of unit. This surprises me, because I thought the two-level units cost more Wyndham Points than a one-level unit.

Any suggestions on what I should request? I'm thinking an upper floor might help avoid noise/odors. Are any of the one-level units on the upper floors? Is there a particular side of the building I should request to be away from noise and the fish restaurant?

Also, the person I spoke to said I can put in a room type/location request, but rooms aren't assigned until check-in. I will be arriving on Tuesday, December 11. Is the resort likely to be full then? Do I need to get there early to have nay options?

I know this is a small resort (around 40 rooms), so that limits the options.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

We want II exchange ?how?

We want the cheapest II exchange capability to use during Thanksgiving or Christmas at places like Gatlinburg Smoke Mountain Resort, Aspen Sheraton, etc...

Looking for low cost and very low maintenance fees. We own 4 weeks of Hilton so the only thing we don't have is the ability to use II.

Would really like the ability to transfer unused points into a hotel program or use for airline tickets should we not wish to vacation at a resort that year.

Probably will never go to where we buy, only exchange for another location.

Breckenridge Colorado Timeshares Question

I have a friend of mine and I am trying to help him find a timeshare that meets the below criteria.

1. He wants something in the Breckenridge Colorado area
2. He wants day use for free that would even be allowed if purchased resale I think most resales still allow free day use anyway so I think this is a no issue.
3. He wants the largest possible unit with the lowest maintenance and best trading power preferably to RCI.
4. Annual Usage

The best I have found so far is the following
6388-Valdoro Mountain Lodge a fixed week 52 that has 58 RCI points. This unit however doesn't lock off, but this could still be a good fit if Valdoro Mountain Lodge gives week 53 for free.

We are not looking on the resale market just looking for what would fit on the resale market then with what notes we have going to find something that fits. Oh would prefer the fixed week 52 over points.

Breckenridge Colorado Timeshares Question

Need quick advice on upgrade.

mardi 24 novembre 2015

We are staying in our first timeshare for the first time. It is a triannual that we purchased with a Charter Package. We have used the charter packge for 2 hot weeks already (great deals). We purchased a 3/2 for 10K. Stormy Point is now in their 4th phase of construction with 4 bedroom units. When we went to the owner's update, they are offering an annual 4 bedroom with a "concierge" package. The MF's would be 10 more and would be every other year vs. every third year we are paying now. They say there is a waiting list for the 4 bedrooms and they have to offer the current owners the upgrade before they can sell to non-owners.

We are now in a positions where we would like to take one or two vacations a year and not have to wait 3 years and rely on just the hot weeks. With the 4BR, we could split it and get 2- 2BR weeks. This option would also allow 3 and 4 night stays. They also said that since we bought before the big amenities were built, they can't charge us for those, but, it allows them to give us an "equity' position that is about 2 1/2 times what we paid.

This scenario seems to fit everything we want. The 3 bedroom sleeps 8. The 4 bedroom doubles the size of the first floor and sleeps 16 (2 kings, 1 queen, 2 twins and 4 sofas) I was only able to find one 4 bedroom on sale for $20K (about 4K less than what they are asking from us). From what little I've read so far, resales are the way to go. But, in this case, I don't see many/any for sale. I'm not sure I would get all the benefits the company is offering. And, since they are newer construction, how long would it be before we could find a good resale?

I am very new to TS's, but, everything that I see makes me think this is something we shouldn't pass up. What do you all (the experts) think?

He does want us to sign a paper tomorrow either taking it, or not. He is a salaried worker and didn't seem bothered by us not taking it. It appears that many others are. If we have a right of refusal being owners, how long can we extend our decision?

Sorry this is so long, I wanted to make sure I included some of the pertinent details. So glad I found this site.

Thanks!

Deb

Help! How do I unload my time share at Westin?

Hi everyone,

I just put my timeshare up for sale here at TUG. I have tried to sell it in other places, and yes I pad them to do it; I have gotten nothing for this money I spent.

I paid $18k and have dropped the price down now to $7k. Am I destined to lose everything on this? I have the membership dues I have to pay in January.

Is it better to donate it, and how does that work?

Thanks for any advice.

Will be visiting there in a few weeks. Any suggestions as to buildings. We prefer a view of the mountains or golf course? Thanks.

Sandos Playacar Junior Suite same as a 1 bdrm?

Hello all,

We just booked our first Mexico trip thru RCI at Sandos Playacar. Lot's of good reviews by TUG members, TY all very much.

Front desk just confirmed a handicap accessible Junior Suite for us in March. Can anyone say for sure thata junior suite isplayacar's version of a 1 bedroom suite? I mean a suite that has a living/sitting room with a separate, walled-off room and door.

We are 2 adults and 2 young kids. 1 bdrm apt-style room is what we are expecting. Any Playacar regulars have the scoop?

Thanks

United Flight Using Miles

I just went into my United app to look at my flights I booked a few months
Ago Using miles and I noticed that it says this flight has been wait listed. What
Does that mean? My seats are still listed there but if I go into try change my
Seats it doesn't allow that. My seats are fine, I don't need to change them but I
Just noticed that when I was trying to see what this wait listed flight means.

I've never seen this before.

Any great timeshare resorts in Detroit MI region?

I'm clueless about the area...but I have a trip booked through DTW this summer and wonder if it would be worth a stopover. What's worth doing in Detroit itself if I stay over a couple nights? Is there a highly recommended timeshare within a reasonable driving distance? TIA for any tips on the area's "must see" and "must do" places!

The Royal Cancun - Perplexed about AI

I've been searching for a resort in Cancun using filter "ALL-INCLUSIVE NOT REQUIRED".

Today subject resort came up with a mix of comments and the best I could tell is a $99 per day resort fee and NON all-inclusive. Has anyone run into this before?

I def don't want the cost of all-inclusive but might consider a $99 fee for a 2 BR unit.

I put the unit on hold.
