Last minute help needed!

jeudi 31 décembre 2015

Hello All,

First post, don't have a full grasp on timeshares yet, but know enough to ask for help here! :)

I'm trying to help my mom with her Wyndham timeshare. She and my Father had and enjoyed it for many years, but he passed last year and she doesn't want it anymore (or the MFs!) We are planning on selling the contract next year, but have done nothing with this year's points (2015) and the use year ends today.

I believe that depositing her 126k points with RCI is preferable to letting them die, depending on if the deposited points stay with the contract (and usable by new owner in the future) or are tied to her individually. I know they had used RCI in the past, but back then their interest was a fixed week, which they have now transferred to points.

Also, from my research, I believe it will require 1 Reservation Transaction (which I have the 2015 free one) and 63 Housekeeping Credits (have 126), so shouldn't cost anything on the Wyndham side. However, I've read there's a $219 Exchange Fee that RCI charges - will that have to be paid at deposit time (by us) or at time reservation is used (by new owner).

I appreciate any timely help on this, and please feel free to offer other advise on how to best proceed. TIA!!

Free Timeshare

Free timeshare! 2 weeks every year. Platinum member. 2 bedroom.
You will own Thunderbird Resort but can freely exchange to the two other properties in QM Resort in Reno, Nevada. Annual fees $850 however, you get two weeks per year and they can roll over. Currently with about 3 weeks available to use. Let me know if you would like it free of charge as I have 4 resorts and need to give one away.

Mother and Daughter Vegas Trip

Happy New Year to everyone!!!

Once again I am here asking for advice. I have spent several hours today reading every post relating to Las Vegas and taking notes but I still have a few questions. I just booked a week's stay at the Tahiti Village for myself and my 25 year old daughter. I won a bid on Sky Auctions for a full 1 bedroom for $360 total. I have been to Vegas a few times in the past for conventions but mostly stayed put. I am excited about this trip because it's my daughter's first time to the Sin City and we are both looking forward to a fun time. Here is what I'd like to know: What temps can we expect the end of March? Will we be able to use the pool and lazy river?

We are planning on doing some cooking in the room but also a few dinners out and shows as well as seeing the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. I read lots of posts on the Red Rock Canyon and the Valley of Fire and am thinking of adding those 2 sites. I am still debating renting a car for the full week but am nervous about driving in Las Vegas. I thought we might book a tour to the Grand Canyon (expensive) and possibly just rent a car for a day or two to visit the other 3 sites. Does the Tahiti Village have a car rental on site? Let's say I do rent a car, is parking easy/free at the various hotels if we are there for dinner/show? If I do not rent a car, what is the best way to get to other resorts in the evenings? I am really not worried about getting around during the day as I understand Tahiti has shuttle service to the strip all day long.

Is taking a taxi from the airport to the Tahiti Village a good idea or should I book a shuttle? I read a lot about Fremont Street, what is that about? Worth going? Thanks for your input and please feel free to offer any advice as well.

Wyndham Bonnet Creek Feb.5-8,2016

Hi, I am looking for a reservation at Wyndham Bonnet Creek for Feb. 5-Feb. 8,2016. My parents are driving up from Naples for our daughter's cheerleading competition at Disney. We have a 2 bedroom booked but need an additional unit. Any size unit would work for those 3 nights. Thanks, Loretta:cheer

What do I lose going resale?

I too am a newbie to TUG, but have long figured out that re-sale is the way to go as far as timeshares are concerned. I realize that I cannot be considered a VIP member with all resale points but what does that actually mean? What am I losing out on?

Specifically I am interested in getting more bang for my buck. With resale points am I allowed to take advantage of discounts at 60 days or less? Will that go away at some point? I have been told both yes and no so i decided to ask here. Thank you.

Transferring Marriott Reward Points

I have a few questions on how the new transfer policy works.

Is there now a 50,000 point annual limit on transfers? In the past, it was limited to the extent such points were needed for a reservation.

I would like to add my wife's points to my account. Should we be transferring points tomorrow so we can still transfer another 50,000 in 2016?

Does the receipt of points transferred count toward lifetime points?

Thanks in advance.

Doc Martin Quote

Here's my favorite quote from BBC's Doc Martin TV show:

Mr Porter: [while stroking his ailing sow's neck] Tell me, what's the most important question you should ask yourself before getting married?
Dr. Martin Ellingham: [while examining the sow] I have my finger in your pig's anus!
Mr Porter: You want me to help you, then I'd dare to humor me.
Dr. Martin Ellingham: Does she make me happy?
Mr Porter: No, close. Very close. Would almost give you that. Actually, go to the wrong way up. It's do I make her happy? End of the day, that's all it's about.

Discogs Turns Record Collectors' Obsessions Into Big Business

Discogs Turns Record Collectors' Obsessions Into Big Business - by Ben Sisario/ Media/ Business/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"BEAVERTON, Ore. — In the beginning, Kevin Lewandowski just wanted a way to keep track of his techno records.

Now, 15 years later, the free website he set up for that purpose, Discogs.com, has become a vital resource for record collectors and the music industry, with a sprawling database of more than 6.5 million releases. And with an online marketplace through which nearly $100 million in records will be sold this year, Discogs has carved out a valuable niche in a market dominated by companies like Amazon and eBay..."

Sheraton Broadway Plantation and Exchange

Hello,

I usually trade on Interval but decided to drop this week at the Sheraton on RCI. I was hoping I could possibly get one of the Disney or Hilton resorts in Orlando for the February break 2016. Do you think there is any possibility or no chance? Thanks for advice.

Google-Backed Lost My Name has Sold 1m Children's Books in Two Years - by Stuart Dredge/ Children's Tech/ Technology/ The Guardian/ theguardian.com

"British startup has shipped to 160 countries, based on its mantra of being ‘a technology company that happens to make physical books.

British startup Lost My Name has sold more than 1m of its personalised picture books for children since launching its first title two years ago.

The company’s The Little Boy/Girl Who Lost His/Her Name book is ordered by parents from its website, with a story based on their own child’s name, as the main character searches for its letters.

Its sales success persuaded Google’s venture capital arm to lead a $9m funding round in the Hackney-based company in June 2015, with fellow Silicon Valley investors Greycroft and The Chernin Group also chipping in.

“We are a technology company that happens to make physical books,” co-founder Asi Sharabi told the FutureBook conference in London. “We are very proudly keeping the physical book alive.” ..."

Login to RCI without going through Wyndham

Hi everyone.

The usual way to login to RCI, is to login to Wyndham web site first. Then under My Membership, I click RCI Exchanges to navigate to RCI site.

Is there a way to login to RCI directly without going through Wyndham? (obviously I will need user id and password at RCI web site).

Advice on selling & RCI deposited points

I am thinking about selling my Wyndham contract.

I have two questions:
1. What happens to the points I deposited into the RCI account last year and this year?
2. Can I convert the "free" Wyndham RCI account to a paid account and keep the points I deposited?

Thanks in advance for any direction/clarification.

Floating Points vs Locked in Week

Hello everyone....I am new to this site. We were at the Hilton Club NY on a HGVC VIP package a couple of weeks ago when I came across your forum...and we are sooo glad we did.

After a sales meeting where we were offered a crazy low amount of points for an insanely high price, we looked on your marketplace and found a HGVC timeshare, have signed a contract with the broker and given a deposit.

Now for the question...on the contract with the broker, it says under, "week # - FLOAT." When we received paperwork today from HGV Title company, it says under, "property address - week 17," followed by the address. It also says nothing about the 8400 points I purchased.

Do we have floating points or are we locked into a certain week? And if we are locked into a certain week (which we do not want), can we cancel the contract since it clearly states something different.

Thanks for any advice you might have,
CiCi

Exploria Resorts Summer Bay HOA fees have gone up tremendously.

Did anyone else finally receive the Invoice from Exploria Resorts Summer Bay Maintenance fees? A shocker! Mine went from 830.00 to $930.00 for a 2 BR condo, 405 building, floating week 1 thru 51. I called several weeks ago and they told me that it would be $830.00 the same as last year. When I received the actual invoice it says $930.70.

VIP Question about buying another contract

I am a VIP gold grandfathered before rule changes with many points through PIC. Have no problems with anything with my VIP (Except stupid salespeople) I have a friend who wants to get rid of his 189,000 Wyndham contract. If I were to buy this from him would it have any affect on my present VIP gold account? Would I be able to use these points with my VIP gold benefits? Where would be a good suggestion for service to handle the transaction? Thank you in advance for any help with my questions

Forced to switch units during the week?

I don't know how many of you read the TUG Marriott board, but one of the recent threads over there ( http://ift.tt/1YQN6VP ) made me wonder about Starwood's policy? During a single Marriott reservation this week in Tahoe, a guest was told at check-in that they would have to move to a new room for their last night, due to an owner coming in to stay in his deeded week/unit (which the guest was assigned to for the first six nights). This is at the Marriott Residence Club in Tahoe, and they will have to vacate/move to a new unit on January 1st (this Friday). What an incredible inconvenience!

With all the overlaying of deeded weeks, deeded units, floating weeks/units, varying check-in days and length of stays, Home Resort, StarOptions, Sheraton Flex, Vistana points, II, RCI reservations... I sure hope a single reservation means one unit the whole time!

Overwhelmed going through family photographs

mercredi 30 décembre 2015

DH and I have spent considerable time going through envelopes and envelopes of family photographs. We only had one DD but we traveled frequently and took many photos. We got rid of all the scenery and blurry pictures but we still have so many pictures. We also have about 20 photo albums that are not acid free and some of those pictures are not in good shape. Do you keep your negatives?

We bought some photo acid free boxes at Michaels and have sorted them that way for now. Any suggestions on what you do with all your pictures.

With digital cameras this problem will not exist much longer and for that I am thankful.

Which Marriott location will you buy to trade?

I own HGVC and two California coast summer weeks for trade through RCI. If I want to explore II, I think Marriott may be a good choice.
For Marriott owners, if you would buy again, which location will you buy?
Will you consider the point system? Any reputable broker that specializes in Marriott properties?

Thanks in advance,
Yvette

Amazon's Holiday Hits Included Instant Film and Turntables

Amazon's Holiday Hits Included Instant Film and Turntables - by Jon Fingas/ Engadget/ engadget.com

"Despite what you'd think, some of Amazon's best-selling tech this holiday was decidedly old-school.

You'd think that an internet retail behemoth like Amazon would primarily sell a lot of cutting-edge tech during the holidays, but nope -- that wasn't the case this year. The company has posted its annual holiday bestsellers, and it turns out that some of the hottest purchases were decidedly retro. The best-selling camera tech this year, for example, was Fujifilm's Instax instant film. A digital camera, the GoPro Hero4, was only a runner-up. Likewise, the top home audio gear was a Jensen turntable, eclipsing a Yamaha receiver and Sonos' Play:1 two-speaker kit..."

Considering The Villa Group - Villa Del Palmar

We have been given an opportunity to transfer a friend's membership of 2200 Points (1 BDRM/1Week) and 1700 Points (1 BDRM/1Week) with The Villa Group. The membership is paid in full and maintenance fees current. We currently own a 1-week deed at Hyatt. The point system is different from what we currently have, but we think we can make it work for our family - either way. Does anyone, by chance, have membership with this group. If so, are you satisfied with them and your trading options?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative complaints on-line about The Villa Group, along with ResortCom - making us slightly reluctant to move forward. Hoping for some informative feedback.

Also, one concern: on the bottom of the Transfer Form it states, "Villa Preferred Access membership will revert to a "Premier" membership with 0 points upon transfer to a non-family member...if the transferee is not an immediate family member (which we aren't) of the Transferor, then the Transferred Membership shall automatically revert to a Premier Membership without any Club Points." This is slightly confusing, as it appears this group goes by the point system. If someone can expand on this verbiage, it would be greatly appreciate too. For some reason, a phone number isn't readily available anywhere on the forms.

Thank you, in advance, for any information you can provide.

FREE! Sheraton Broadway Plantation / 1 Bedroom / Week 31

Free!

Resort: Sheraton Broadway Plantation
Week: 31, but floats (Gold Plus Week - 9-43, 47)
Size: 1 Bedroom
First Use: 2016 if you pay the 2016 fees, otherwise 2017
Note: Week 31 has been booked for 2016.
Maintenance Fees for 2016 of $541.81 have been paid

You can spend your spring/summer/fall vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina! Framed by towering pine trees, Sheraton Broadway Plantation gives a feeling of seclusion. Yet you're right in the heart of all the action - just across the street from famed Broadway at the Beach and approximately one mile from the ocean. It is NOT on the beach, but close to it. Myrtle Beach offers a diverse array of activities for the whole family. Explore unspoiled beaches, amusement parks, water parks, state parks and museums. Tee-up on world-class golf courses, go fishing or sailing. Take in top notch entertainment in the many dinner theaters. And of course, you'll want to make time for some serious shopping.

The is for a Plantation Phase 470 sq. ft. One-bedroom Villa based on availability. Sleeps 4 Max. Separate living room with sleeper sofa. Dining area with seating for four. Kitchenette with microwave, bar sink, dishwasher and microwave cookware, refrigerator with ice maker, toaster, coffee. Washer and dryer inside the unit. Two color TVs -- one in the bedroom and one in the living room with DVD player. Master bedroom with queen bed.

No mortgage and all maintenance fees are current. Annual Usage - Deeded as Week 31, but floats.

This can trade in both Interval International and RCI, but I would recommend depositing in Interval International for internal trade of other Starwood properties.

Closing to be done by Legal Timeshare transfers. Would like the buyer to pay for closing costs and transfer fees. About $150. I will pay the difference.

This unit is free to anyone who is willing to pay the closing costs.

Please PM me if you are interested.

Looking back at 2015...Grateful for TS's!

As is my habit at the close of a year, I take a look back to see what things went well, and what I hope to change for the new year. I usually involve the kids in this, too. The things that stood out to them? Things they want to repeat/not change? Our timeshare vacations! We own four weeks of timeshare, and we managed to be in a timeshare for 6 separate weeks in 2015! (Plus a long weekend at Memorial Day, and a couple of weekends spent with my parents at their exchanges.) I could not have done this without our timeshares.

We had an extra vacation week at Trade Winds Inn in Rockland for Feb break, a week at the Samoset for April break, Memorial Day weekend picked up as a last call at Bethel Inn, our home week at Cold Spring over the 4th, a week at Shawnee in late July, a week at Timber Creek in MO to visit family in August, and now a week here at Cold Spring once again.

We're hoping for 6 weeks in 2016, too. We don't go anywhere fancy (we're not a Disney kind of family) but the time spent together is priceless. We love having room to spread out, enjoy meeting other families, have fun finding things to do that are off the beaten path. Yes, the maintenance fee for those four weeks is sometimes hard to pay. But I do it every year, and then look forward to creating memories together with my family! Here's to a great 2016 for all of you here on TUG, and here's to many more wonderful vacations!

Buying a Mandatory AI

I presently own a TS in Puerto Vallarta that is not AI. I save about 300US per week by owning a one bedroom plus I can bank and get free upgrades etc. I look at eBay occasionally to see if there are any more for sale at my TS. What I see are quite a few AI Mandatory for sale. I have checked some out and the AI is pretty much the same as on a travel site. So why would anyone by a TS AI. Wait time at Marriott vacation club

I believe I had posted this 4 or 5 weeks ago, but this is Monday, December 28, and tried to call at noon with a 45 minute wait; 3:00 p.m. with a 40 minute wait; then at 7:45 p.m. with a 35 minute wait. DH just got a response. We have been members since the early 90's and have never experienced this. Ok, just asked the reason why, and was told there are a lot more owners now. We have owned since 1990, and if there are a lot more owners now, should they not have more employees to handle the demand?
We also asked for the owner rate for a timeshare, and it was $100 more per night than we could get today on line. So 23% less just going on line than getting an owner discount!
Guess, I'm just letting off steam!

Fluctuations in Open Season Availability?

I'm still relatively new, and trying to figure out how everything works, but...

I'm interested to make an Open Season reservation for a couple of nights in Orlando. I'm tied to very specific dates. When I looked online this morning, there were a variety of room sizes at all of the Orlando properties. But after I sorted out exactly what I wanted to do, the next time I logged in, most of those options had disappeared, and I'm left with the choice of a studio at Sea World or a studio at Parc Soleil.

I could book one of those, and it'd meet our basic requirements, but if, say, we'd prefer to be at Tuscany, or we were hoping to get a 2 bedroom in case my father-in-law who lives in The Villages wants to stay over when he comes down to hang out with us for the day--what's the likelihood that additional availability might crop up as we get closer to the date of travel.

Should I snap up one of those studios, or wait and hope for more options?

Just out of curiosity, it this allowed? Also, how would the regular TUG members who rent out Wyndham TS's feel if someone that they rented to did this?

It doesn't affect me a bit, just wondering.

I used to credit pool my points and then make reservations, cancel, and then put those points into RCI. Is that still possible with the change Wyndham made to cancellation points?

Divi Village or LaCabana Beach??

I'm looking to exchange to Aruba and these are the only 2 resorts available for my dates. We've never been to Aruba, any suggestion on which resort to choose? DV3 or LCB? We would like to be on the beach

Divi Village or LaCabana Beach??

Just spent a week at Barony...

We were in a newly renovated villa and it is beautiful. They have removed the awful jetted tubs and now there is a large shower in the master and a regular tub/shower in the second bedroom.
There is new tile in bathrooms and on floor in entry. All new appliances (with bottom freezer fridge). All new furniture and art- very nicely done.
The only odd thing is that they did nothing to the kitchen cabinets- still the old pale wood ones with the wooden knobs.
Overall it is very nice.
It is warm here and people are swimming with in the ocean and outside pools.

which Timeshare to buy?

hi guys

I'm trying to compare DVC, Mariott VC, Hilton Grand Vacation, Starwood, Diamond, and any other ones that's out in the market. I'm planning to buy resale.

Which one would you recommend and why?

We are a family of 4, 2 boys 4 & 7. We do plan to do the Orlando Disney trip once every few years for the next decade, maybe one Europe trip, and maybe 1-2 Hawaii trip. But my primary vacation desire is to either just lounge at an all inclusive in the Caribbean / Mexico / somewhere for a week, or go on road trips where we can see a lot of stuff at different places over the week. It looks like I will have on average 3 weeks of vacation a year for the next decade or 2.

Given the above, which timeshare company provide the best bang for the buck and you would recommend, and why?

Thank you for your help.

GlobeQuest Travel Club in Cabo

Hi All,

I recently purchased a jr bedroom suite at Casa Dorada in Cabo through Globequest http://ift.tt/1mNmsvY.

I read a handful of reviews on Globequest (GBS) but most are from 2010-2012 and were negative about trying to cancel. I don't see much in 2014 or 2015.
I reached out to a few folks on here (thank you for the responses), but am looking to comfirm whether or not this was a good decision.

Does any have a 'timeshare' through Globequest here? Is it a legit timeshare company? Do I need to start the rescind process?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Signed,

Do not tour list

So air am at Starbucks Island and went in for my owner update. At 60 mins exactly, I stood up and said I was ready to go. The sales guy said, if you leave now, you won't get your gift. I immediately pointed to my gift slip which says 60 mins, and the timer on my phone which showed 61 mins and again repeated I was ready to leave. He proceeds to tell me how I was using my phone during the group presentation and that time didn't count.

Anyway the manager came by, gave me my slip and said that I am no longer able to tour. So what does that mean? Will I no longer be harassed about a parking pass? Will I no longer be able to get free gas money?

One favorite past time of mine on vacation is screwing with sales people and getting paid for it.....

II not accepting Marriott Ocean Pointe 2016 Deposit

Reserved my 2016 week for Deposit online yesterday expecting to be able to redeem for exchange today. Did this online with Marriott yesterday and I noticed the unit was not in interval. Figured I would give it a day to settle into the system.

Called Marriott, and the rep in turn called her II contact. Low and behold the II rep could not get my unit to deposit either. Well, Well, Well I have to say WTF is going on here. What with all of the membership fees, and exchange fees why can't they manage to get my unit into II.

Marriott laughing said there is a problem. She took my number down and both II and Marriott recognize this a big issue if II can't get deposits into the system. She gave me her contact as well.

Any of you Tuggers ever had this similar experience?

What DRI is Doing Right

I recently came back from DRI Scottsdale Mirage. While many posts deal with DRI shortcomings and complaints, let me point out some things this particular DRI resort was doing well.

Having owned at Powhatan for something like 25 years, I have been to many resorts, including my own a number of times. My recollection of timesharing is something less than a nice resort or hotel. The desk aims you toward your unit and you're on your own. Kitchens are often, even at the best resorts, supplied with cheap junk small appliances and cooking utensils. There's a coffeemaker with two or three filters and you have to go out and buy enough for the rest of the week, which is why I started traveling with a supply of both kinds of filters so I would not have that issue. We were also greeted by a sheet of paper listing every knife, fork, appliance, towel, etc. in the unit and were expected to take inventory so we wouldn't be accused of stealing something after we left. There was always a procedure for check out which included, in some cases, stripping the beds and piling linens and towels in a certain area to save housekeeping some time. We also, of course, had to haul out the garbage. We also got used to being charged for internet in the unit and, sometimes, in the lobby (Thanks, Marriott).

When checking in this time, there was no inventory to take. There were toiletries in both bathrooms, not the tiny hotel sizes, but larger tubes and bottles including such things as body lotion and bath salts. And they came in a nice travel case (which we left behind). The kitchen had plenty of supplies including coffee filters and disposable dispensers with salt and pepper. As with our home resort, the small appliances in the kitchen where very good Cuisinart, not the cheapest Walmart junk we have found in some of the best timeshares. The pots and pans were also Cuisinart. There's just something about cooking with the good quality stuff like you have at home to make the place feel a little more luxurious. The three TV sets, in the living room and both bedrooms, were all good sized flat screens with HD and HBO.

We were offered mid-week housekeeping service. She came a bit early so we declined a room makeover. However she did hand me a big armload of fresh towels. There was free, reasonably fast internet in the room and two desktops, with a very handy printer, in the lobby, which had people gathering in it constantly There was a coffee bar with a fancy coffee machine going 24/7.

The staff were very friendly. When we were ready to check out I asked if we had to do any of the usual things such as stripping the bed or taking out garbage. The young lady looked shocked and said, "No. We have people for that! Just walk out and close the door." She also asked if we needed help with luggage. I said no but might have accepted if we had a flight or two of stairs to contend with.

The bottom line is this was more like a stay in a better hotel or resort and less like the timeshare experience I have become used to over the years. I don't know if this is DRI procedure or the way that particular management is running their resort. But it sure beats the stripping the beds and taking out the trash I have become used to as an end to my vacation.

Room assignments at Maui Ocean Club

Does anyone know when they do the room assignments? Does it help to call and talk to someone?

We are going for my husbands 50th and we have an ocean front studio in the older section along with a two bedroom. My preference is to have both rooms close, but my first preference is one of the rooms with the biggest lanai. We are traveling with a group, so enjoying cocktails on the lanai would be amazing.

Which floors have the best lanais?

Anyone heard of 3RD HOME through Hacienda Encantada in Cabo?

I have bought into Hacienda Encantada program. Residential Fractional ownership. No required maintain economic fees. Buy back a few weeks per year for 7 years. On and on can 3 months in studio very large for 4200.00. Something I really liked was they will take 8 contracts from another Mexican Resort that has steep yearly maintance fees required and guarantee me sale. This would cost me 927.00 for all 8 contract total to get rid of this is at least 11,000.00 in required maintenance fees per year. Name of that company is International Equity Resale. Everything is very inflated on paper, but getting rid of the contracts without trying to sell for nothing and transfer or just dump.
I'm very aware of saying if it's too good to be true it probably is. If anyone has bought this program let me please know.
Never fear have 5 days to rescind, but would appreciate any information anyone has.
Thanks

Should I stay at HGVC Las Palmeras in June?

Never been to any of the Orlando HGVCs. Planning a business/personal trip in June 2016.

I will be attending a large conference at the convention center (iDrive) in June 2016. Amazingly, the conference hotel booker is offering 2 HGVC options. We will stay on business for 4 nights; then extending the stay an additional 3 nights using HGVC points.

The HGVC Las Palmeras and HGVC Seaworld are both listed as a possible conference hotels with Las Palmeras charging $199/night and HGVC Seaworld at $169/night for a 1 bedroom.

Bookings begin in 2 weeks; so I can't find out more about either of the HGVC resorts or rooms.

Washer/Dryer either in the unit or onsite are a deal breaker for me. We will have a rental car.

Press releases vaguely state that HGVC Las Palmeras Resort will undergo renovations in summer 2016. I am concerned that we will be stuck in a old hotel room with lots of construction noise and banging if we book Las Palmeras.

Which resort should I book -- HGVC SeaWorld or Las Palmeras? Any suggestions or insights?

New Family looking to join a vacation club

Hi everyone

My parents bought a disney time share and it seems like they are always traveling. The accommodations were so nice I couldn't imagine traveling with my growing family and not having a kitchen! I have a little one with plans on 3. I have been researching all the different vacation clubs and its painful weeding through all the specifics. Id prefer my home base to be williamsburg, VA. Its within driving range in the event 5 plane tickets aren't in the budget. I do want the option to travel outside of my home base regularly and do not want to pay full price, I'm looking for a resale. This kicks the marriot and starwood out as options. The holiday Inn seems a bit much up front considering people are giving away wyndham timeshares and the maintenance fees seem comparable. Any advice on the best company for buying at resale.

Thank you
Cindy

Outerbanks

Hi everyone,
OK, thinking of going to the Outerbanks late next August. We have never been there. We are not planning to stay in a time share, but rather rent a big house with my sister and her husband. My sister does not have any children, she suggested this trip, and they have never vacationed there either. We are a family with 2 older teenagers and a son 22 and daughter 24. What is there to do in the area?
Are there activities for teenagers, is there a boadwalk?
Are there shops and restaurants near by or do you have to drive everywhere.
Thanks ahead of time for any advise/information.

Year end update???

We just checked into Kingsgate and got a different pitch from the parking pass crew. Sinc we are preferred owners, we need to attend a meeting to be sure that we are "grandfathered" in all of Wyndham's improvements for 2016. Seems that MF will go down, there will be a Wyndham setup that will be better than RCI for exchanging, RCI exchanges will cost more, new login coming...and other fancy enticements.

And if I don't give them several "convenient" tmes then I will need to sign a document declining to participate in the great and glorious new things to come. Oh, and this document must be signed when we check out.

Of course there will be no sales pitch and it is all for our good.

Am I right to assume that this is a pile of.....stuff?

If I sell my WRMV, will buyer still be able to float?

I'm planning on selling/giving away my 2-bdrm at Westin Riverfront Mountain Villas. It is a week 31 "float". I understand that the new owner (bless them!) won't get StarOptions, StarPoints, SVN or II. But will they still be able to float the week at WRMV? Or are they tied down to week 31 (a very nice summer week in the mountains btw)?

If anyone else has recently done this, would you be willing to PM me your contract and closing company info?

The 50 Best Business Schools in the World 2015

The 50 Best Business Schools in the World 2015 - by Emmie Martin, Melissa Stanger, and Tanza Loudenback/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"Earning an MBA can provide business-school graduates with an increased salary, a vast network of industry contacts, and new opportunities, but the extent of these career benefits can vary significantly depending on the school.

For our sixth annual ranking of the best business schools, we looked at 60 perennially top-rated institutions that offer MBA programs and evaluated them based on the most recent data available on five metrics: reputation (determined through our annual reader survey); average starting salary after graduation; job-placement rate (the percentage of graduates employed within three months of graduation); average GMAT score; and tuition and fees.

We considered reputation and starting salary as the most telling factors of a school's worth, and these categories were weighted more heavily than the other three. Read a breakdown of the methodology here.

The revamped methodology reshuffled this year's ranks with surprising results, with the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School topping the list for the first time. The highest-ranked international school on the list is the London Business School, earning the No. 12 spot.

Wanting to "upgrade" to 2-bedroom

Any advice for the best way to upgrade from a 1-bedroom to a 2-bedroom at the resort I own? Ideally I would like to go to a 2-bedroom every other year. Is there any chance a broker who specializes at my resort may be willing to work with me? I own at Bay Club Hawaii, a resort managed by HGVC.

Memories from years ago

During our recent family Christmas dinner with relatives and friends, many of the older folks were sharing stories about "the good 'ole days".

Here's one of them:

Back in the old days when home phones were slowly becoming available to households, my aunt answered her new home phone and was sure that it was a scam because the male caller said he wanted to come to her house to pick up her fur coat and clean and store it for free in the building he had recently rented for his business. This was in the middle of a heat wave.

My aunt told him she didn't own a fur coat, in fact she doesn't own any coat or jewelry at all, and her tough husband keeps her locked up in the house, oh and he has 2 guns.

So when here husband came home from work, Auntie bragged to him about how well she had scared off a burglar or killer. That's when her husband told her that the caller was his boss's son. The son was not very bright so the father was trying to set him up in a business he could handle. OOPS

Lehigh Acres so far so good!

Hi Tuggers,
Just checked in last night to Lehigh Acres resort in South West Florida area. Not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised. Winn Dixie store is 2 minutes away, after long traffic filled drive, went out and bought dinner and relaxed in our one bedroom comfortable unit. I have been asked how a one bedroom can sleep 5 . This one is like our Summer Bay with One bedroom King Bed, ,sleep sofa in Living room, as well as a single Murphy bed. It is just us two, but good to know you can fit 5 if need be. I will write a review later, as we start using the facilities. Full resort, but very quiet, compared to other places we have stayed. Happy New Year!

Unintended Result: Gacy Probe Clears 11 Unrelated Cold Cases

Unintended Result: Gacy Probe Clears 11 Unrelated Cold Cases - by Sharon Cohen, Associated Press/ News/ Chicago Tribune/ chicagotribune.com

"His task was to solve a cruel mystery decades after a serial killer's death.

Sgt. Jason Moran's work began in a graveyard, his first stop in his quest to identify the eight unknown victims of John Wayne Gacy. More than 30 years had passed since Gacy had murdered 33 young men and boys; most of their remains were found in his crawl space.

Investigators now had more sophisticated crime-solving tools, notably DNA, so the Cook County sheriff's detective was assigned to find out who was buried in eight anonymous graves.

Almost immediately, Moran had a breakthrough: He helped a family confirm what it had long suspected — Gacy killed their brother..."

Can we refuse to change room in the middle of week's stay?

dimanche 27 décembre 2015

We just checked in the Grand Residence Tahoe today. Upon check in, we were told that we have to change unit the last night of our 7 night stay, and it is not guaranteed the room is immediately available after we move out.
I was really upset upon hearing this. I had made the reservation for 7 nights more than 12 month in advance with 20% Destination point premium. During those 12 month, could they not have contacted me in advance to let me know this will happen? I have no desire to spend my New Year's day packing/unpacking and moving. Plus, I paid for 7 nights/days, if they do not make the unit immediately available, then am I losing half day of what I already paid for? Can I refuse to move? Who can I contact at Marriott to have this resolved if it can not be done locally here? (General manager won't be in till Monday. )
If anyone has experience dealing with similar situations, your advice is greatly appreciated!

Midnight booking - is there a trick?

Ugh... two nights in a row I got locked out. :bawl:

The 1st night, I tried to log in at midnight but that was a big mistake because I couldn't get in. The system appeared to be overloaded. When I finally got in everything was gone.

The 2nd night, I logged in 15 minutes earlier and got to the reservation screen when midnight strike, I was able to select my room but it kept spinning forever to detemine eligible points and gave me the countdown of how much time remained. I completed the task within the timeframe then I got an error. Again back to the drawing board but this time I continue to get multiple errors until everything is gone. :wall:

So what's the trick for midnight bookings?

Quickest Owner Update Ever

I checked in for my owners update. The woman at the desk tells me, oh you're an owner, we don't have anyone available right now to talk to you. Have a seat. A few minutes later, another woman comes by and says that I can go down the hall to get breakfast. When we reached the breakfast room she said that after I'm done with breakfast, I can stop at the desk and pick up my gift. No one came over while I ate breakfast. I listened (and cringed) to the sales pitch of the people at the booth next to me. After I was done with breakfast, I went back to the front desk, they already had the gift card waiting there. They gave me the card and away I went.

WKORN - pushy concierge

I have always been politely asked to attend an owner update, and always politely decline. This year, however, the concierge kept pushing an pushing. She was really pushing because "the Sheraton on Kauai is happening."

I had to walk away. I felt rude, but only for a minute.

Not sure if it was just the gal I spoke with or if they are being told to be more direct.

Rental Royal Haciendas B Uite Jan 2-9 Week Zero

Account is online. Now a bunch of newbie questions.

I just got my deed in the mail earlier this week, so I really wasn't expecting my account to be set up for another 4-6 weeks or so, but just to see if there was anything I could do to avoid increased transfer fees after Jan. 1 (and also to double check that I didn't need to rescue points from the prior owner, because the closing company didn't send me a copy of the estoppel), I went ahead and called.

To my surprise, they were able to give me an account number--less than a week after the date on the deed (if you count the holiday). So I registered a username, etc., and I'm off to the races. My first booking was an open season stay over Dr. King's birthday weekend in Las Vegas (celebrating civil rights by playing pai gow poker? Hmm). We booked a 2BR, because a friend might come along, and I canceled a studio at Elara, which I'd booked as a hotel stay through the Hilton website, because open season at the Boulevard was so much cheaper. Plus--studio, versus 2BR, and it's still cheaper. Terrific!

But now, I've got a whole boatload of questions.

1. I couldn't get revolution to work, so I made my open season booking in classic, which worked fine. But, in terms of availability, I noticed that some properties are missing entirely. So, like, if Elara doesn't show up, is it the case that there's just no open season availability at that property, or are some properties not online?

2. I was under the impression that within the 30 day window, it would be possible to use either points or cash for the open season reservation, but it didn't seem to give me a points option, which makes me wonder whether I'm navigating the transaction the wrong way, or whether I'm wrong about being able to use points within the 30 day window.

3. We've got the two-bedroom reserved in Vegas, but there's a possibility that other friends might want to join us that weekend, as well. I know that the rules say that you have to use an open season reservation yourself, but would it be possible to reserve additional units at the open season price for friends, as long as they're staying at the same property, for the same time period, and if I were to be present at check-in? I don't want to break the rules, but if I could snag a couple of other studios or 1BRs for friends who wanted to join us...well...that'd be terrific.

4. I also looked at making an additional open season booking at a different property for another time, and it said that I couldn't do it on-line, that I'd have to call. Would that still be the case if I'd managed to get revolution to work on my computer? Just wondering if the capacity of what you can do online is different.

5. I'm very excited about this. I know that's not a question. I gave it a number, anyway.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Closing on 2 Club Wyndham Plus Properties

I am closing on 2 Wyndham Properties I bought through a resale company , deeds were recorded 12/11/2015. The status of points still available this year (270,000 & 180,000 available for 2015) they expire DEC 31,2015. Wyndham takes 4-6 weeks to transfer ownership once Wyndham receives the recorded deed and the $299 resort transfer fees. My question is can I request the points be transferred to RCI so I don't lose the 270,000 & 180,000 2015 points. Wyndham says if I can get both of the owners to agree to this on a three way call they would do it. I have no access to owner since I bought from a resale company. I just hate to see the points expire if there is a way not to. Also My current ownership is April - April will this effect the expiration of the new points I acquire. Any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

On the Trail of Kafka in Prague

On the Trail of Kafka in Prague - by David Farley/ Footsteps/ Travel/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"When I awoke one recent morning in Prague from unsettling dreams, I found myself changed into a tourist on a mission. Changed, anyway, from the traveler I had been when I lived in Prague for three years in the 1990s.
From Our Advertisers

Back then, whatever associations I had between the city and the writer Franz Kafka, a native son, were negative. I loathed the commercialization of Kafka, his face scrawled across coffee mugs and T-shirts in souvenir shops, his name emblazoned on awnings of Old Town cafes and restaurants.

Yet there was always something nagging at me about never having explored the Kafka trail in Prague, an integral part of the city’s cultural history. On top of that, Kafka’s novella “The Metamorphosis,” in which the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, finds himself transformed into a bug, was first published in book form this month a century ago..."

Owning the Sky: How Netjets is Winning the Private Aviation Game - Paid for and Posted by Netjets/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ paidpostnytimes.com

"The control room is expansive, yet surprisingly quiet. On the walls, clocks display times from scores of cities around the world. To a casual observer, the space, filled with more than 100 workers, might be a Wall Street trading floor or the newsroom of a national newspaper. But this hive of activity, housed in an enormous building not far from the runways of Port Columbus International Airport in Ohio, is home to the operations center of NetJets, the world’s largest private air travel service.

Last year, NetJets flew 239,922 flights — nearly 700 a day — in the U.S. and abroad. Were it a commercial carrier, NetJets’ fleet of 700-plus aircraft would make it the fourth largest globally, ahead of Southwest Airlines and Lufthansa. NetJets is built on a fractional ownership model, meaning customers purchase an interest in a specific aircraft type, and have access to that aircraft for a corresponding number of hours each year. Other private aviation companies may have a similar structure, but NetJets, which has 50 years of operating experience and is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, is the clear industry leader, with more than 70 percent of the fractional ownership market..."

Update

update was a little aggressive.

Changes:

- desired minimum ownership level - 8500 points
- can no longer incrementally get to Silver/Gold/Platinum - want to sell 15,000 / 30,000 / 50, 000 points etc at one time
- there were some special events for Gold key owners over the last few months.
- Combo going away for Gold Key Resorts owners, i.e. can't use the combo program to bring in Gold Key Resorts for additional points since the resorts are already owned by DRI. Don't understand this since this was never the case with Island Links.
- going after the 2nd home market

if somebody attended the Northen VA DRI dinners discussing the Gold key resorts acquisition please share what you where offered.

Bliss Riviera Maya - Now Bliss Jungle and other changes

We own a week at the Bliss, Riviera Maya,NOT the Grand Bliss. I understand that this resort is now in the Interval International system as Bliss Jungle.

Is that correct? I have also heard a rumor that the Vidanta Resorts may become part of the Starwood...now Vistana Vacations?

We own here, but we have not been back since 2009. We don't pay MFs if we don't use it, so I admit I know very little. We are Interval Platinum through Starwood (I upgraded it to Platinum) so I'm hoping I can add this resort to my Interval account with Starwood, or perhaps find more uses for it.

If anyone has any info I would appreciate your comments, etc.

Thanks!
Marie

Buyer Guide [Rescinding Developer purchase]

Hello,

Me and Wife bought 7000 credits for $15,000 + ~$600/yr maintenance fee, 2 days ago. I'm trying to find out if we should rescind within the 5 day we have. I think the answer is definitely yes.
My wife still thinks the program is good, mainly because they included 2 week long "fantasy trips" (costing about $250/per).
I was on sellmytimesharenow dot com and see WAY better deals for timeshares that have a "home resort" but similar prices i.e.http://ift.tt/1ZvkfDx for timeshare that dont have a home resort ("Multi-Destination")

I believe we dont have a home resort, therefore is the deal we got really bad. How can we get a good deal on vacation ownership, because we really like the idea? My wife was concerned about the process of buying resale and about the safety in buying resell.

Thank you all so much for this forum it is going to save us if we dont have a good deal.

Edit: its a Worldmark timeshare. I think that makes a difference. I see there is a sub forum for worldmark, so please move thread if it should be.

The Tax Sleuth Who Took Down a Drug Lord

The Tax Sleuth Who Took Down a Drug Lord - by Nathaniel Popper/ Business/ Deal Book/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"Gary L. Alford was running on adrenaline when he arrived for work on a Monday in June 2013, at the Drug Enforcement Administration office in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. A tax investigator, he had spent much of the weekend in the living room of his New Jersey townhouse, scrolling through arcane chat rooms and old blog posts, reading on well after his fiancée had gone to sleep.
From Our Advertisers

The work had given Mr. Alford what he believed was the answer to a mystery that had confounded investigators for nearly two years: the identity of the mastermind behind the online drug bazaar known as Silk Road — a criminal known only by his screen name, Dread Pirate Roberts.

When Mr. Alford showed up for work that Monday, he had a real name and a location. He assumed the news would be greeted with excitement. Instead, he says, he got the brushoff..."

Disappointed in RCI

My New Year's resolution is to never use RCI for a trade again. Last week I called to book a week in RCI points (not TPU's) on the Outer Banks that slotted in nicely between two other weeks I had already booked and to deposit my 2016 home resort that is in RCI points so that I wouldn't have to borrow from 2017. Well the rep ended up trying to deposit another timeshare resort of mine that is not even in points. The deposit failed of course and so the Outer Banks week I had been told was booked, ended up being reposted and someone else got it.

Follow up emails did no good and they showed little interest in helping me. It was a frustrating experience and I believe that many there do not have a good knowledge of their system, the person that messed my trade up even told me that the exchange fee would be $59 (I wish) for the weeks exchange.

However, I love the sales, Last Calls and Instant Exchanges. So I am stuck with RCI, but no more exchanges.

TSVon's Canadian Road Trip

This past fall, I spend a little over two weeks on a grand road trip from Milwaukee, to NY to Maine and on up into the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

In spite of the rainy weather, it was really a glorious trip. I took a lot of photos but wasn't able to really write/blog about the trip until I was back home.

I thought folks might enjoy reading about my solo adventure that spanned 16 days and over 5,500 miles! There were bowling centers (candlepin and 5-pin) as well as lighthouses & covered bridges.

I hope folks will enjoy the blog!

Our Most Stunning Antique Photos of Women Around the World

Our Most Stunning Antique Photos of Women Around the World - From National Geographic Photo Gallery/news.nationalgeographic.com

"An early form of color photography called autochrome gave pictures a "wonderful luminosity."

In 1907, brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière developed the first commercially viable form of color photography. Their process, called autochrome, used glass plates coated with millions of microscopic color filters, each one consisting of—believe it or not—a dyed, powdered grain of potato starch.

The starch grains essentially transformed the plate into a stained-glass window made of red, green, and blue dots, which filtered the light shining onto a light-sensitive emulsion. Up close, the resulting photographs looked like dots of various shades of red, blue, and green. But from a distance, viewers’ eyes blended the colors into muted, dreamlike tones—making autochromes look like pointillist paintings.

"That's one thing that's unique about the autochromes that you don't see with modern photos—that beautiful painterly look," says Bill Bonner, image collection archivist at National Geographic...."

Wyndham access--strategy question

Hello--Please feel free to school me/spank me. I freely admit I am a beginner and am overwhelmed at the complexities inherent in this racket.
We are finishing our "Discovery" time and actually like it. The offer is to convert to W. Access permanently, but I am not happy with the price relative to points/time.
So I looked at some resales...they look good. Am thinking of buying a resale of 400,000 pts for 7,000 (Wyndham offer is for 15k for 105,000). If we bought the resale, during one of our stays we would go to one of those obnoxious sales presentations and upgrade back into mainstream Wyndham and up to 500,000/gold.
--Can I trust that the resale is legit? Will Wyndham accept the points, will I be able to access services like a "real" member? Will the resale be valued the same as a first-time membership when they convert it?
--Do resales actually come through or are they just scams? What do I need to look for in order to insure legality of transfer?
--Where and how can I get smarter (besides this page) on how to effectively enter this den of vipers?
They have a really nice product, I don't understand why they need to work like
used car salesmen.
Thanks for any coaching, Allan H.

The 2016 WorldMark, The Club annual budget was recently approved by the WorldMark Board of Directors at their October meeting. During a time when prices are increasing daily due to higher energy and utility costs, increased healthcare and labor costs, as well as higher taxes and regulatory requirements, we are happy to report that Bonus Time will only increase by one-fifth of a penny per credit from $.058/credit to $.060/credit, with a minimum of $50 USD for each night reserved. WorldMark was able to keep costs under control thanks to sound management and leveraging our Developer's resources and contacts.

For those owners utilizing additional housekeeping services beyond their annual complimentary allotment, there will be a slight modification to directly cover increased costs for housekeeping staff and cleaning products and services. The 2016 housekeeping fees will follow the schedule <see WM website>. All changes will be effective Jan. 1, 2016.

Effective January 1, 2016, many of these tax rates will be increasing, and a few will be decreasing. Also, 19 additional WorldMark resorts have been subjected to a new tax, effective on all stays confirmed on or after January 1, 2016.

Suggestions for downsizing?

We have a 500K Great Smokys contract, and it is more points than my extended family is able to use, so I'm looking to downsize to about 200K. With credit pooling, the smaller contract would still meet our needs.

We're going to deposit about 250K unused points into RCI next week, and in the transition to a smaller account, I'd like to hold onto those.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to go about this transition?
