Discounts & Upgrades

We’ve seen a lot of discussion about the value (or lack thereof) of VIP upgrades and discounts. Lots of anecdotal, qualitative discussion but I don’t recall seeing much quantitative analysis. So here goes.

At the moment, I have twenty-three Wyndham reservations that are within the 60 day upgrade window. Of the twenty-three, seventeen have been upgraded or a discount taken, or both. Some of the seventeen were upgraded at the time I made the reservation, some later. Four can’t be upgraded because they were the top units at that resort when I made the reservation (examples: 2BR units at WestWinds, Royal Vista, or Santa Barbara). I’m still trying to upgrade two reservations that start January 23, 2016.

The “points chart price” of those reservations is 2,506,000 points. The upgraded/discounted cost of the seventeen reservations is 936,000 points, a savings of 1,570,000 points. At $5/1,000 points, it comes to about $7,500; at $6/1,000 it is about $9,000.

This analysis is a bit skewed. Most of the reservations are off-season, which means there were units to upgrade from and to upgrade to. I can’t say it would come out the same during prime seasons.
