"After the driest holiday period since records began, the legendary high tides returned to Venice this past weekend.

Acqua alta — the high water that floods into the Venice lagoon, leaving parts of the city underwater — is a great divider. Either the idea of swimming in St. Mark’s Square (as hardy tourists do each year) is a bucket list ambition, or it spurs travelers to put off visiting until the summer, when the risk of flooding is lower but tourist logjams in the narrow alleys are a certainty.
